There were more women than I expected. Is the demographic of female comic book readers really +40%? Or were these just the girlfriends of these geeks? A lot of never saw the light of day pale tattooed skin, and piercings, dressed in a lot of black with heavy eye makeup. They prowled around the convention center like they owned the place in their super-hero / princess Layla tube tops with a lot of fierocious sexuality. I got the eye a couple of times & it made me uncomfortable. It was only noon but it made me look around the convention center for a bar.
In the back Boba-Fet's son was signing autographs. He was grown now & his line was pretty short. What a wierd gig, sub-B list actors hanging out all day to sign stuff; it was even far less glamorous than ComicCon was depicted in Entourage.
I went to a panel discussion about web-comics. All of the panelists were very knowledgable, smart & weren't afraid to utilize their vocabulary. Somehow this surprised me. I guess that just because someone is obsessed with comics doesn't mean they are dumb or less worldly, in fact if anything it proves the opposite. While remembering the name of Superman's father doesn't have any real-world utility, it does mean that someone is adept at storing away massive amounts of useless information, which a very handy skill in corporate america.
Do comic book artists have more sensitivity on average? Less testosterone & more introvertedness? It takes hours & days & weeks of sitting and drawing to put a few panels of a strip together. In the artist alley, left & right people were cranking out amazing work. When I was kid I wanted to be able to draw like that, but there was that one kid in school who made you realize how meager your talent was. This was a convention center full of these kids who grew up & and right before your eyes they could make a page come alive.
In the webcomics they said that they only make 10% of their income from Ads. They said that hey have to sell comics, stickers, t-shirts, & other merch to make the rest. Later they went on to talk about the demise of the newspaper in 5-10 years. I do see a lot of papers going out of business & etc, but until they get a better medium than paper to view some current information, the paper will be around for awhile. Besides no one is making much money selling this info any-other way, it doesn't quite add up yet, so the real-analog paper world will be around for awhile.
There was a small contengent of Black folks at the event. I talked to "Hollywill" from Jones Journey studios out of Tacoma. He developed the "Teenage Kung-Fu cotton tail girls (TKFC) black manga. He assured me that the girls would be arriving soon. He was part pimp, part manga artist.
